4 Ways To Drastically Improve Islamic Learning | Step 3 Not Becoming Despondent

Salamu Alaikum All,

We are now on our third step, and it is a crucial step in your learning, which is not becoming despondent. Its is very easy to become despondent, and with over ten years of teaching Arabic and Islamic studies one of the biggest obstacles of a student is this phase.

As stated in earlier emails, we need to identify what is:

  • Beneficial to us
  • Seeking Allah’s help before embarking on the project.

Once these two important factors have been identified and actioned, we need to not allow despondency to creep in, we need to facilitate our learning through prioritisation. If we are to memorise a particular Surah, or read that islamic book we have wanted to for so long, it needs to be a priority. If you are studying an Islamic studies course, the course needs to become one of the focal points of your day. Far too many students allow life to consume them, using the excuse of being ‘busy’ when in reality the answer for their lack of attention to the course is not making it a priority. The last thing we want is motivation, what we are looking for is consistency.

Now that you have your aim and you have sought the help of Allah you need to do the following :

  1. Create a time window that you know you can stick to.
  2. Do not try to study for an entire hour, try to do 20-30 minutes per session.
  3. Invest in your learning, buy the best equipment for yourself (according to what you can afford) to receive the best outcome. You will automatically feel better about yourself and your studies.
  4. There will always be ups and downs in life, if one small crisis turns the entire ship over, you will will never succeed.  Learn to devote yourself to this regardless of what is happening in your personal life.

You will then slowly develop mastery of your craft. It will become a source of pleasure, and a source of refuge for you in hard times. You will find Allah helping you in reaching this goal, fight through the hard times and Allah will make things easier.
